  • EESC has published the study produced by WISE and SHINE: “Crisis costs for SMEs”

EESC has published the study produced by WISE and SHINE: “Crisis costs for SMEs”

On December 2022, the European Economic and Social Committee has officially published the study Crisis Costs for European SMEs – How COVID-19 changed the playing field for European SMEs“.

The research is the product of a joint partnership led by Wise Angle in collaboration with SHINE 2Europe in collaboration with the International Network for SMEs (INSME)

According to the study rationale, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has become the landmark for one of the greatest recessions ever experienced. As such, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) were not exempt from dramatic financial and employment-related losses. However, not all industry sectors suffered the same negative rates of income or job disruptions and there is still limited evidence on the matter. In addition, the unexpected invasion of Ukraine from Russia at the end of February 2022 became the trigger for a new wave of generalised economic crisis for all business sectors and sizes.

Therefore, the objective of this study has been to develop a systematic classification of COVID-19 (and international crisis)-related impacts on SMEs. It also included an identification of “winning” or “losing” adaptation factors displayed through crisis management. The study developed an explanatory framework by generating six categories of “pandemic challenge areas” (containment measures; workforce; finance; digitalisation; public assistance and European diversity) and a targeted performance analysis for SMEs in 6 industry sectors (Manufacturing, Construction, Research & Innovation, Tourism, Agri-Food, Retail) over an EU-12 sample of countries. Its conclusions have been meant to provide support to policy-making for recovery and competitiveness of SMEs against an uncertain economic scenario for the foreseeable future.

Over the course of one year, staff from the two organisations delved into multiple research methodologies (systematic & scoping literature reviews, qualitative fieldwork with 36 semi-structured interviews, quantitative data gathering and re-elaboration of EC/national SME data) to secure updated results and feasible solution-formulas for the sake of the European small and medium enterprises landscape.

The Research Team is glad for the intellectual challenge provided by study development and is especially grateful to all those stakeholders who contributed their voice and statements to the realisation of this enquiry. Most importantly, the researchers hope that the findings may be of high use to institutions, stakeholders and even individual businesses alike.

  • New EU-OSHA study on psychosocial risks for workers with low socio-economic conditions

New EU-OSHA study on psychosocial risks for workers with low socio-economic conditions

On September 1, 2022, a joint tender partnership led by Wise Angle in collaboration with NOTUS asr has been awarded the research contract:Overview of OSH research regarding mental health at work of workers with low socioeconomic status”.

Research related to workers’ mental health has been progressively acquiring wider importance in the occupational safety and health (OSH) sphere. However, while the specialised literature has been increasingly dealing with the implications of psychosocial risk factors and mental health in employment, these have more often focused either on holistic perspectives or sectoral views through selected industries or workers’ groups, often leaving vulnerable groups and particularly exposed workers in low-skilled or low-paid jobs on a marginal side of the political and regulatory debate.

As such, the objective of this new study is precisely to respond to the request of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and provide the client with an appropriate theoretical strategy and empirical methodology for the systematic identification, collection and analysis of specialised literature akin to the topic. The research project thus proposes an ambitious Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of main academic databases coupled with an holistic exploration of the databases of key stakeholders, international organisations and research institutes. The findings will be aimed both at the identification of possible cause-effect relationships in psychosocial risks for low-skilled/low-paid workers and the identification of good practices of prevention/intervention for mental health.

WISE is proud to be officially working with NOTUS, a non-profit independent research organisation with longstanding experience in developing research studies and EU-funded projects on the analysis of working conditions, employment and labour relations.

The Kick-Off Meeting with the Contracting Authority was officially celebrated on September 7th, 2022. Our research team presented the study frame, answered questions and gathered a first detailed round of feedback from EU-OSHA about the research approach and step-by-step methodology.

We are excited to take advantage of this funding opportunity and continue developing knowledge relevant to address important societal and economic challenges.

  • Train the Trainers to STEP_UP

    Train the Trainers to STEP_UP

STEP_UP Project Activity: “Train the trainers to STEP_UP!”

Right after some WISE holidays, we  were glad to host partners’ staff from the STEP_UP consortium to develop the Short Term Joint Staff Training at our newest premises in the Barcelona Health Hub!

Participants of the first short term training events are the key personnel members of the partner organisations, who will present the training courses in local languages during the national multiplier events. The group of participants reflected the multidisciplinary approach of the STEP_UP project, as it includes social science researchers affiliated to University, consultants, adult educators and public functionaries related to health policy.

The participants were led through a short introduction of the project and a much more detailed list of sessions guiding future trainers through the modules and content of the project. There was also a section particularly dedicated to the execution of workshops and multipliers alongside discussion spaces leading to constructive feedback for the intellectual outputs of the project.

Once again, we have been glad to develop another one of the activities envisioned by the project and for hosting the staff of our partner organisations!

Looking forward to the finalisation of the STEP_UP online game (currently in Alpha mode), the Manual on Pandemic Health Measures and the Trainer Toolkit for conducting related workshops.

    Stay tuned for more news!

  • Plenty of exciting STEP_UP News!

    Plenty of exciting STEP_UP News!

As we are fully active during the final year of the STEP_UP  project, there are more and more news regarding our own project activities.

STEP_UP is a European Erasmus+ project that started in December 2020 and will last until the end of February 2023.it intends to develop a training tool for social care and community stakeholders, where they are introduced to the impact of behaviours in the spread of a pandemic/emergency situation and trained, through gaming strategies, to prevent and cope.

Take a look at the recently published 2nd Newsletter to learn more about our WISE contribution! Whether being hosted for an interview, writing on the Spanish long-term COVID strategy or contributing even more to the Game and Training Manual development, there is plenty to check out!

Most importantly, we have had the greatest pleasure to host our partners of the project in Barcelona for the 4th edition of the Transnational Project Meeting! On June 27-28, representatives from the other 4 countries in the project (SHINE from PT, ISIS from DE, AFEdemy from NL and CIPH from Croatia) were hosted at our new premises of the Barcelona Health Hub (BHB). A very productive meeting was accompanied by even more pleasurable networking time together, between a cultural visit of the Art Noveau Site at the Sant Pau Hospital and a traditional Spanish Tapas Dinner.

In the next couple of months, we will also have the pleasure to host the project-related “Short term Joint Staff Training” in order to prepare the personnel from partner organisations to take the most out of our project outputs and employ them in multiplier dissemination events as to inform stakeholders about our own creative work!

    Stay tuned for future updates!

  • STEP_UP Suvey: Evaluation of COVID-19 Measures

STEP_UP Suvey: Evaluation of COVID-19 Measures

The overall goal of the STEP_UP project is to create an interactive training tool to identify possible responses to pandemic outbreaks and to assess their impact on society and the spread of disease. STEP_UP means “Stop Epidemic Growth Through Learning“.

As part of our activities, the STEP_UP Consortium (including Wise Angle) has been assembling 5 Thematic Reports containing measures for different sectors directly involved in management and prevention of the Coronavirus Pandemic. The ultimate goal is to use such materials to produce a comprehensive Policy Manual of Social and Healthcare for practitioners and stakeholders.

Thus, the aim of this STEP_UP e-survey is to learn more from your experiences on working with the Coronavirus outbreak and the measures that were taken or recommended to contain the spread of the virus and the consequences of isolation.

The collected data will only be used for scientific purposes and the participation in the survey is voluntary.

    Remember that:

    • The questionnaire will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.
    • You will remain anonymous throughout the process
    • The main language of the survey is English, but translation can be given upon request
    • It is directed at all professional categories affected by the project (i.e. municipality official, social caregivers, health personnel and administration) but can also be filled by volunteers and citizens

  • WISE and SHINE join forces in a new EESC study on COVID-19 effects over SMEs

WISE and SHINE join forces in a new EESC study on COVID-19 effects over SMEs

On November 10th, 2021 a joint partnership led by Wise Angle in collaboration with SHINE 2Europe  and the International Network for SMEs (INSME) has been adjudicated the contract:Crisis Costs for European SMEs – How COVID-19 changed the playing field for European SMEs“.

    Study Subject

The study aims to make a status quo assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on SMEs with a view to understand how the economic framework and playing field for SMEs changed due to the pandemic and what perspectives SMEs have for the future. An in-depth analysis of selected SME sectors, also taking into account employment consequences, will show the different needs of the sectors and how they can be supported in the years to come. Based on this analysis, a strategic plan of economic and public policy measures to support SMEs will be defined.

    Our Contribution

Our partnership has elaborated a detailed proposal including an original framework for the theoretical study and an intense fieldwork including both in-depth, semi-structured interviews with experts and real-life testimonial SMEs relaying their personal experience on pandemic management (Check here for more information).

The consolidated partnership of Wise Angle and SHINE 2Europe has now been enriched by a fruitful collaboration with the International Network for Small and Medium Enterprises (INSME), a legally recognized not-for-profit association working under the auspices of the OECD. Counting on 64 Members from 34 different countries, the Network is a facilitator for the creation of public-private partnership, a gateway to innovation good practices for the support of SMEs and entrepreneurship and a catalyst of information on opportunities, latest trends and insights on innovation, SMEs, technology transfer and entrepreneurship.

Both their assistance and the EESC collaboration will be fundamental to get in touch with top-rank experts and to being able to provide a first set of exploratory patterns on different SMEs performances throughout the pandemic. At the end of our exploration, we also aim at the development of a comprehensive list of public policy recommendation supporting future policies and instruments for European SMEs.

    Study Inauguration

The Kick-Off Meeting with the Contracting Authority was officially celebrated on November 25th, 2021. Our research team presented the study and answered questions on a first round of feedback from members of the EESC Reflection Groups on SMEs (ascribed to the Employer’s Group).

While we complete our first round of feedback, the theoretical study and the preparatory ground for the fieldwork are well under way. We are excited to take advantage of this funding opportunity and continue developing knowledge at the service of European small and medium businesses.
